Hemorrhoids

What to Do When You Have Hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoids can cause excruciating pain that sometimes feels intolerable. The burning sensation and bleeding that arise from hemorrhoids can leave you feeling as though your condition is incurable. However, this isn’t the case! There are many simple treatments to relieve pain and alleviate symptoms. Let’s take a look at what your best course of action is when you have hemorrhoids.

Consult with your doctor

You may feel embarrassed to see a doctor about your hemorrhoids, but there’s always a benefit of seeing a doctor despite the embarrassment you may experience. Because your doctor can examine your hemorrhoids, he or she can determine the cause and then recommend effective treatments for your condition. Your doctor will want to know if you have blood in your stool, and any other symptoms you are experiencing. The doctor will then perform a digital rectal examination where he or she will insert a gloved, lubricated finger into your anus to identify internal hemorrhoids or other strange conditions. Again, this might be embarrassing or uncomfortable for you. However, your doctor will ensure you’re comfortable during the exam, as his or her main goal is to make sure the exam is painless.

Try changing your diet

Patients with hemorrhoids can soften their stools by consuming more fiber. Foods that contain high amounts of fiber are fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and natural cereals. Consuming more fiber will help you avoid painful straining when passing stool that can worsen the symptoms of hemorrhoids.

Consider over-the-counter medication

Products that can be used for hemorrhoids include creams, ointments, and gels. You can also take oral pain relievers to temporarily ease the pain. Most of these medications can be found at your local drug store or online, making them a great option for quick relief.

Try a sitz bath

A sitz bath is a bath where you sit and soak your hip in a few inches of warm water. You should try a sitz bath regularly, a couple of times a day for 15 to 20 minutes if possible. This method can help you decrease the inflammation of your hemorrhoid. Make sure to dry off your anal area well to get rid of the moisture that can cause irritation.

Use wipes

When you have hemorrhoids, it is important to keep your anal area as clean as possible. To do this, you can bathe, shower regularly, and gently tap with wipes that don’t contain alcohol or perfume to dry your anal area. It is also important to note that you shouldn’t use dry toilet paper when wiping after your stool. Use wet toilet paper or wipes that don’t contain alcohol or perfume.

Consider surgery as your final option

Although the majority of patients can manage their symptoms by trying the methods mentioned above, you might want to consider getting surgery if no treatments are working. Non-surgical treatments are preferred due to painless methods and fewer complications. Surgery for hemorrhoids is known as hemorrhoidectomy or stapled hemorrhoidectomy. If you’re considering getting the surgical treatment, consult with your doctor for any further details.
